Eyes That Speak of Love: Shining Eyes

Many love songs describe the gaze and beauty of a lover's eyes. Lovers are captivated by the brilliance of their partner's eyes. The pupil, or the black part of the eye, acts like the lens of a camera, adjusting to light; it constricts in bright light and dilates in dim light.

Furthermore, pupils dilate when someone feels strong curiosity or sexual arousal. This is a physiological response beyond one's conscious control.

When someone is dealt a good hand in a game of mahjong or cards, even if they maintain a poker face, a glimpse into their eyes will reveal their brilliance. There's a story about Chinese jewelers who wore dark glasses during business negotiations. Apparently, when they found something good, their eyes would inevitably shine, so they wore glasses to prevent revealing this to the other party and avoid selling their goods for less than they were worth.

Looking into someone's eyes reveals what they are curious about and what excites them. There's an experiment where men were shown nude photos of women, resulting in significant pupil dilation. In men who are attracted to men, however, showing them photos of women elicited no reaction; their pupils only dilated when shown photos of the same sex.

Pupil dilation can be considered an unconsciously conveyed sexual response. When someone is interested in another, they feel sexual attraction, causing their pupils to dilate. In romantic love songs, this is described as "shining eyes," but when sexual curiosity is more prominent, it becomes a "gaze burning with desire."

Will whispering sweet nothings in dim light work its magic?

It's also known that people with large pupils are considered more attractive. There's an experiment where male subjects were shown two photos of women and asked to judge which one they found more attractive.

The two photos were identical except for one detail: they were both pictures of the same woman's face. One photo, however, had the pupils digitally enlarged. The majority of the men, despite not being able to pinpoint the difference between the two photos, said they found the one with the enlarged pupils more attractive.

There's a story that, in the past, European prostitutes used eye drops to dilate their pupils in order to seduce men.

It's said that a dimly lit place is more romantic when confessing your love. Besides the fact that it's easier to see your partner in low light, this can be interpreted as being related to the fact that pupils dilate and shine in the dark. Large pupils can also be captivating to the opposite sex.

Pupil Feedback: Gazing into Each Other's Eyes Makes You Fall More in Love?!

Lovers who gaze intently into each other's eyes feel drawn in. At that moment, their pupils are likely dilated. Our pupils dilate in response to being gazed upon by large pupils.

An experiment using two eye patterns was conducted to confirm pupillary response. The results showed that when looking at an eye pattern with dilated pupils, the observer's pupils also dilated.

This is called pupil feedback. Lovers are captivated by each other, causing their pupils to dilate, and being gazed upon by those dilated pupils further captivates them. When they look into each other's eyes, they find the same brilliance there.

This same reaction can be a romantic expression of love, or it can be a manifestation of instinctive attraction and sexual curiosity.
